Saifukuji is a Zen Buddhist temple of the Soto sect, boasting approximately 500 years of history and located at the foot of Mt. Akagi in Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture. Its most defining feature is the incredibly detailed carving and plasterwork created by Ishikawa Uncho, a master artisan of the late Edo period. Renowned for his extraordinary skill, he is often referred to as the "Michelangelo of Echigo." The main hall and the Kaizan-do hall are adorned with breathtakingly luxurious and intricate decorations that showcase the pinnacle of Japanese craftsmanship. This temple is a rare cultural heritage site where the weight of history and the sublime beauty of artisan artistry coexist.
Founded in 1534 during the late Muromachi period by the monk Hositsu Sodai, Saifukuji originally belonged to the Tendai sect before transitioning to the Soto sect. One of its most prestigious features is the "Sixteen-Petal Chrysanthemum Crest" (Kiku-mon) found on the ceiling of the main hall. This crest was granted by the Imperial Family around 1860 through the influence of Matsudaira Sadakata, the lord of the Kuwana Clan. These symbols, along with the Paulownia crest, are strategically placed throughout the main hall and the entrance of the Kaizan-do, serving as a testament to the temple's deep historical connections with powerful figures of the past.
The highlight of Saifukuji is the profound detail found in the carvings and plasterwork of the Kaizan-do entrance and interior. The powerful dragon sculptures by Ishikawa Uncho, the delicate cloud patterns, and the vibrant ceiling paintings offer an overwhelming sense of density and artistry.
