The Saga Torii Moto Traditional Buildings Preservation District is a historic enclave located in the tranquil Oku-Saga area of Kyoto. This area historically developed as a temple town serving Atago Shrine. The traditional architecture has been meticulously maintained alongside the surrounding natural environment. The preservation museum features a reconstructed two-story residence from the early Meiji period. Based on rigorous field surveys and local oral histories, the exhibits accurately reproduce the daily life of the era, serving as a vital center for preserving the local cultural heritage.
The museum allows for a close-up look at the intricate details of traditional architecture. Exterior features include 'Mushiko-mado' (insect-cage windows) with mud-plastered walls, traditional chimney vents, lattice work, and 'Battari Tokugi' (low wooden benches). Inside, you can observe the 'Tori-niwa' (earthen passage), the 'Okudosan' (traditional kitchen stove), and even a well where water still flows.
