Ryuzu Falls is a breathtaking scenic spot located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. The waterfall features a stream flowing for approximately 210 meters, cascading energetically over a series of stepped rock formations. The name "Ryuzu" (Dragon Head) originates from the unique shape of the waterfall's base, where a large central rock divides the water into two streams, creating a silhouette that resembles a dragon's head. The split currents flowing on either side look like dragon whiskers, providing a truly distinctive and majestic landscape.
Due to its striking geological features, this location has been cherished and known by this name for many years. The presence of the massive rock that divides the water at the base of the falls is the defining element of its identity. As a vital part of the natural landscape in the Nikko area, the falls are celebrated for showing different, beautiful expressions with every changing season.

The greatest attraction is the dynamic movement of the water as it rushes down the tiered rock steps. The unique split in the stream caused by the central rock is a sight found nowhere else. Visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire waterfall, including the base, from the specially installed observation deck. The surrounding flora also creates a colorful tapestry that changes with the seasons.
The visual transformation of the landscape is quite remarkable throughout the year. From May to June, you can enjoy the vibrant colors of the blooming Togo-ku Mitsuba Tsutsuji (Azalea). However, the most famous season begins in late September, when the autumn colors start appearing. Ryuzu Falls is known for having some of the earliest autumn foliage in the Nikko area, featuring brilliant reds and yellows from maple trees and other species. The view from the observation deck during the peak foliage season is a true highlight of the region.

The primary experience is observing the powerful force of the water from the observation deck. It is a perfect place to observe the artistry of nature and feel the transition of the seasons. Whether you are a photographer or a nature lover, the dynamic flow of the water and the surrounding natural environment offer a deeply relaxing experience.
The area around Ryuzu Falls is dotted with various spots where you can fully immerse yourself in the nature of Nikko. It is easily accessible by car or bus, making it a perfect way to include a scenic natural stop in your Nikko sightseeing itinerary.
