Ryusoke Falls is a majestic waterfall with a drop of approximately 60 meters, located in Ikeda Town, Imadate District, Fukui Prefecture. It was officially designated as one of 'Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls' in 1990. Situated at the confluence of the Buko and Hieda Rivers, the waterfall features a unique branching structure where water flows smoothly down the rock face. The surrounding landscape is a masterpiece of nature, offering a different visual experience with every season.
The area is steeped in legend. It is said that a monk named 'Ryuso' once lived here, dedicating himself to carving Buddhist statues and practicing asceticism. Local folklore also tells of a dragon that resided in the deep plunge pool, occasionally racing up the falls to ascend to the heavens. These mythical elements give the waterfall its name and a profound sense of spiritual history.
The most striking feature is the 60-meter vertical drop and the dynamic movement of the water. From the viewpoint just below the stairs, visitors can gaze up at the full scale of the falls. Additionally, the area downstream features a collection of potholes (natural rock basins) carved by the force of the water and the rock face, providing a fascinating geological display.
The scenery changes dramatically throughout the year. From summer to early autumn, the contrast between the white falling water and the deep green of the surrounding forest is breathtaking. During the autumn foliage season, the landscape is transformed by vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red. Please note that during the winter season (roughly late November to early April), access to the area may be restricted due to weather or road conditions. Always check local reports before visiting.
