Ryusendo Cave, located in Iwaizumi Town, Iwate Prefecture, is celebrated as one of Japan's three largest limestone caves. The cave system is incredibly dynamic, with known sections stretching 4,082 meters, and much of the terrain remains a mystery as exploration continues. The greatest allure is the beauty of the subterranean lakes scattered throughout the cave. In particular, the lake known as the 'Blue World' radiates a mystical blue glow due to its extraordinary transparency, a sight that leaves visitors in awe. Additionally, the cave is home to bats, which are designated as a national natural monument.
This subterranean world was sculpted by the forces of nature over an immense span of time. Through the process of water droplets dissolving limestone over thousands or even tens of thousands of years, complex and beautiful stalactite formations were born. Ryusendo is not merely a scenic spot; it is a precious site protected as a national natural monument due to its unique ecosystem and geological significance. The landscape, a masterpiece of nature, serves as an important testament to Japan's natural history.
The interior of Ryusendo Cave contains several subterranean lakes. Currently, three lakes are open to the public. These lakes are characterized by their vivid blue appearance, which changes depending on the angle of light and the water's clarity. The cave is also filled with countless stalactites, stalagmites, and stone columns of diverse shapes. Walking through the illuminated passages allows you to clearly observe the textures of the rock walls and the intricate details of the formations. The public area covers approximately 700 meters, where you can experience the beauty of underground architecture through well-maintained paths.
Ryusendo Cave is open year-round, allowing visitors to enjoy the changing atmosphere of the seasons. However, because the temperature inside the cave remains around 10°C regardless of the season, warm clothing is essential. During the hot summer months, the cave serves as a perfect natural air conditioner, making it an excellent destination for cooling off. Please note that operations may be suspended without notice due to weather conditions such as heavy rain or rising water levels, so it is important to check the latest information before your visit.
The walking tour through the cave offers an extraordinary experience far removed from daily life. The cave environment is consistently around 10°C with high humidity. Even in summer, please bring a thick jacket or sweater; the facility does not provide rental clothing. Since the ground may be damp, we highly recommend wearing non-slip, comfortable shoes. Pets are not allowed inside the cave. Payments can be made via cash or credit cards (Visa/MasterCard, etc.), but having cash on hand is recommended for a smoother experience.
