Ryumon Falls is a powerful natural landmark located in Kuju, Oita Prefecture. This waterfall was formed over many years through the erosion of the Chikushi Lava Plateau. Characterized by its impressive two-tiered structure with a 26-meter drop and a 40-meter width, the rhythmic flow of water creates a harmonious and powerful landscape. The name of the falls carries a deep historical significance. It is said that during the Kamakura period, the monk Rankei Do-ryu, who traveled from Southern Song China to spread Zen Buddhism, visited this area. He named the falls because he felt the scenery was strikingly similar to the famous 'Longmen Falls' in Henan, China. This historical connection highlights the timeless beauty and high regard for which this landscape has been held.
The greatest attraction is the powerful two-tiered water flow. In the upper tier, the water glides smoothly across the wide rock face, while in the lower tier, it cascades down the slope, creating a white, frothy spray. The surrounding landscape features volcanic rock formations known as columnar joints, where the basaltic rock has cooled into unique, geometric shapes. Visitors can enjoy the vibrant colors of fresh spring greenery or the brilliant hues of autumn leaves that frame the waterfall.
