Ryukoji Temple is a significant Buddhist temple of the Nichiren sect located in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture. It is widely renowned as the stage for the 'Ryukuchi Persecution,' one of the four major persecutions faced by the founder of the Nichiren sect, Nichiren Daishonin. This site holds immense spiritual and historical weight for followers of the sect.
The founder of Nichiren Buddhism, Nichiren, faced severe oppression from the government due to his outspoken religious views. In September 1271 (Bun'ei 8), Nichiren was brought to the Ryukuchi execution grounds. According to legend, just as the execution was about to proceed, a blindingly bright light appeared from the direction of Enoshima, dazzling the executioners and causing the execution to be halted. This miraculous event is known as the 'Ryukuchi Persecution.'
Following this event, in 1337, a disciple named Nichiho established the 'Shikihido' to house the 'Kubi-shiki' (the skin/surface used during the execution attempt) and a statue of the founder. This marked the formal beginning of Ryukoji. Later, in 1601 (Keicho 6), the temple's structure was further solidified through a donation by Shimamura Saime, a devout follower of the Nichiren sect. Although the temple's scale was affected by government religious policies during the Meiji era, it has undergone extensive restoration and remains a vital center for the Nichiren sect today.
The most striking feature of Ryukoji is its connection to the life-saving legend of the Ryukuchi Persecution. Visitors can experience the profound atmosphere of the site by visiting the Shikihido and other historical structures that serve as physical witnesses to the history of Nichiren's teachings and the survival of his legacy.
