Ryugado Cave, located in Kami City, Kochi Prefecture, is one of the largest limestone caves in Japan. The landscape was formed over countless years as water droplets dissolved limestone, creating a mystical and breathtaking environment. In addition to the well-maintained 'Sightseeing Course' designed for general tourists, the cave offers more intense experiences such as the 'Adventure Course' and the 'Nishihondō Course,' allowing visitors to feel the raw power of nature up close.
Ryugado is officially designated as a Historic Site and Natural Monument by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. The natural beauty within has been carefully preserved for many years. To protect the cave's delicate ecosystem, access is regulated based on guidelines from the Agency for Cultural Affairs. For example, the Nishihondō Course is only open from April 29th to September 30th each year, ensuring a balance between natural conservation and tourism.
The interior of the cave is filled with diverse and stunning stalactite formations that leave visitors in awe. On the standard Sightseeing Course, you can enjoy the ethereal scenery illuminated by lights along the path. For those seeking a more intense experience, the 'Adventure Course' is highly recommended. Led by a navigator, you will navigate through the darkness for about 200 meters, crawling through narrow passages and climbing wooden ladders, providing a thrilling experience far removed from daily life.
While Ryugado Cave is open year-round, specific courses have limited availability. For instance, the Nishihondō Course is only accessible from April 29th to September 30th. Please note that due to weather conditions, cave entry may be canceled unexpectedly even with a reservation; therefore, checking the weather on the day of your visit is crucial. Visiting during daylight hours allows you to also enjoy the beautiful natural environment around the cave entrance.

The 'Adventure Course' is a program where you can experience true darkness and silence alongside a professional guide. Near the cave exit, you will find rest areas, museums, and shops. For example, the 'Exit Free Rest Area Komorebi' and the Ryugado Museum allow you to relax and spend a peaceful time after your exploration. There are also souvenir shops nearby where you can experience the local culture of Tosa.
The interior of the cave is humid, so wearing clothes that can get wet is essential. If you participate in the Adventure Course, be sure to bring a change of clothes and a towel. It is recommended to avoid wearing raincoats or windbreakers that trap heat. For footwear, prepare for wet and muddy conditions. Please note that entry is restricted to elementary school students and above. Visitors with physical disabilities should consult with the staff in advance regarding accessibility.
