Ryuzu Falls is a dynamic waterfall located in Unnan City, Shimane Prefecture, consisting of a 40m high 'male' waterfall and a 30m 'female' waterfall. Situated within the Ryuzu Yaetaki Prefectural Natural Park, its name comes from the sight of the water flowing so powerfully that it resembles a dragon ascending to the heavens. It is recognized as one of 'Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls' and is celebrated as one of the most magnificent falls in the Chugoku region. The contrast between the intense spray of the male waterfall and the cascading flow of the female waterfall is truly overwhelming.
This area has long been known as a place where one can feel the raw energy of nature. The Meiji-era poet Keigetsu Omachi once praised its beauty, stating that among all the waterfalls in Izumo, Ryuzu Falls is the finest. Furthermore, the area contains a cave where a 'Waterfall Kannon' (a Buddhist deity) is enshrined, playing a significant role in local spiritual-natural worship. Every August, the 'Ryuzu Falls Festival' is held, featuring traditional waterfall dances, preserving the deep-rooted local culture.
The greatest highlight is the 'Urami-no-taki' (Hidden View Waterfall), where you can view the falls from inside a cave. The lower part of the male waterfall forms a cavern, offering a mystical view of the water falling from above, showcasing the sublime beauty of natural formation. Additionally, the ability to observe the different water patterns—the heavy vertical flow of the male waterfall and the cascading steps of the female waterfall—is a unique charm of this location. Within the well-maintained natural park, you can feel the sound and spray of the water with your entire body.
While Ryuzu Falls shows different expressions throughout the year, it is particularly impressive during seasons when water volume is high or when the changing seasons are most visible. As it is a natural park, there are no specific closing times, but visiting during bright daylight hours allows for a clearer view of the cave interior and the intricate movements of the water. Visiting during the 'Ryuzu Falls Festival' in August is a special opportunity to enjoy the power of the falls alongside traditional culture.
The experience focuses on sensing the beauty of nature through all five senses. Entering the cave to hear the roar of the water and feel the spray from directly below is a unique experience not found at many other waterfalls. You can also stroll along the surrounding walking paths to observe the rich ecosystem and the complex geological landscape. It is a place where you can spend time experiencing both the stillness and the dynamic energy of nature.
Ryuzu Falls is located near the border of Unnan and Izumo cities, surrounded by lush natural environments. Nearby, you can also find 'Yae-taki' falls, and visiting both will deepen your understanding of the local waterfall culture. The area also has connections to legends of the Yamata-no-Orochi (the eight-headed serpent), allowing for a route that combines nature with local history and myth.
The area is a natural park with some maintained paths, but there are unpaved sections and steep areas. Please wear comfortable, non-slip shoes. It is also recommended to carry a bear bell for safety. To protect nature, please take all your trash home, do not collect plants, and do not stray from the designated paths. Since the ground near the falls and inside the cave is wet and slippery, please exercise extreme caution.
