Rurikoin Temple

Overview and Charm

Rurikoin is a serene temple situated at the foot of Mt. Hiei. Its name is derived from 'Lapis Lazuli' (Ruri), one of the seven precious gems that decorate the Pure Land, symbolizing the brilliant blue glow of the main garden. The temple is renowned for its spectacular seasonal transformations, particularly during the special viewing periods in spring, summer, and autumn, when the garden displays breathtaking shades of green and crimson.

History and Cultural Background

Rurikoin serves as the Kyoto main temple of Muryojusan Komyo-ji. It has long been celebrated for its ever-changing natural scenery. A unique cultural highlight is the presence of the Louis Icart Museum on the grounds. This museum, which showcases the works of the famous French printmaker Louis Icart, was established in 2008 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Kyoto and Paris.

Access to the inner garden is only permitted during specific special viewing periods in spring, summer, and autumn. The best times to visit are for fresh greenery in spring (mid-April to late May), deep green scenery in summer, and the famous autumn colors (around October to December). While the general viewing hours are from 10:00 to 17:00, please note that the last entry is at 16:30. We highly recommend arriving early to ensure a peaceful experience.

• Parking: There is no parking available on-site. Please use public transportation.
• Groups: To maintain the peaceful atmosphere, tours organized by travel agencies or large groups are generally not accepted.
