Rurikei is a breathtaking valley located in Nantan City, Kyoto Prefecture, stretching approximately 4 kilometers. The landscape is defined by the clear Sonobe River and the lush natural forests lining its banks. Designated as a national place of scenic beauty in 1932, it is now maintained as the Kyoto Prefectural Rurikei Natural Park. Originally known as 'Namera,' the name was changed during the Meiji era to 'Rurikei' (Lapis Lazuli Valley) by a person moved by its beauty. The name reflects how the sunlight reflects off the clear waters flowing from Tsuten Lake, making the valley shimmer like a precious blue gemstone.
This area has long been a destination for poets and artists. During the Meiji era, many famous literati and painters visited to compose poems and paintings inspired by the scenery. Even the renowned painter Tetsusai Tomioka visited in 1911 and immortalized the landscape in his poetry. The area has a deep cultural connection to the appreciation of nature, and since its designation as a prefectural natural park in 1964, it has been cherished for both its conservation and its role as a scenic destination.
The valley is dotted with unique rock formations, waterfalls, and deep pools. The highlight of any visit is exploring the 'Twelve Views of Rurikei,' a collection of twelve iconic spots. These locations feature poetic names such as 'Gyosoban' (Jade Rolling Plate), 'Soryuen' (Twin Dragon Abyss), 'Zazen-seki' (Zen Meditation Stone), and 'Suisho-ren' (Crystal Curtain). At the upper reaches of the valley lies the man-made Tsuten Lake, where visitors can enjoy the tranquil sounds of nature amidst a lush forest. The geological makeup of rhyolite, granite, and quartz porphyry has resulted in striking rock formations and waterfalls shaped by centuries of erosion.
Rurikei offers a different face in every season. From spring to early summer, the valley is painted in shades of light and deep purple by blooming Azalea flowers. It is also a renowned destination for autumn foliage, when the deciduous trees transform the landscape into a vibrant tapestry of color. Near Tsuten Lake, you can spend a peaceful time listening to the calls of wild birds and the gentle sound of flowing water.
As a well-maintained natural park, the area offers various walking trails for connecting with nature. Near Tsuten Lake, you can enjoy leisure activities such as boat rentals. For more active visitors, the hike to the summit of Mount Miyama (approx. 791m) offers a 360-degree panoramic view; on clear days, you might even see the distant Osaka Bay.
