Rokusho Shrine is a historic shrine located in Meidaiji-cho, Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture. It is said to have been founded by Matsudaira Kiyoyasu, the grandfather of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and holds a deep connection to the origins of the Tokugawa (Matsudaira) clan. The most striking feature is the unique landscape where historical architecture sits side-by-side with modern urban life. The sight of a train passing directly behind the vermilion torii gate is a symbolic view representing the coexistence of Japanese daily life and ancient tradition.
This shrine was established by inviting the deities from the Rokusho Shrine in Matsudaira-go (near present-day Toyota City). Founded by Matsudaira Kiyoyasu, it served as the tutelary deity (ubusuna-gami) for Tokugawa Ieyasu and received significant protection from the Edo Shogunate. Historically, it is said that only daimyo with a status of 50,000 koku or more were permitted to ascend the stone steps in front of the Romon gate, reflecting its deep ties to the Tokugawa family. Today, it remains a vital center of faith and community.
The shrine houses several precious structures designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. A must-see is the Honden (Main Hall), Heiden (Offering Hall), and Haiden (Worship Hall), which were reportedly renovated under the orders of Tokugawa Iemitsu during the Kan'ei era (1634–1636). The Romon (Gate), built in 1688, is also a masterpiece of Edo-period architecture. Additionally, the shrine preserves the 'Rokusho Shrine Ema Group,' a collection of 83 votive tablets that are designated as tangible folk cultural properties of Okazaki City.
While the shrine offers a peaceful atmosphere year-round, October is a particularly vibrant time due to the 'Reisai' (Autumn Festival). During this period, you can witness traditional events such as the children's mikoshi (portable shrine) procession, the dedication of the Hoei dance, and various musical performances.
