Rokkanon Miike is a volcanic crater lake with a diameter of approximately 440 meters, located in the northern part of the Ebino Plateau within the Kirishima volcanic group in southern Kyushu. This lake was formed by a phreatic eruption approximately 20,000 years ago, resulting in a concentrated masterpiece of natural design. The water is highly acidic (pH 3.4–4.8), and due to its high transparency and depth, it displays a striking cobalt blue hue under clear skies. The area is surrounded by a rich variety of flora, including conifers like fir and hemlock, as well as broadleaf trees such as oak and maple, creating a serene and lush environment.
The site is steeped in legend dating back to the year 959. It is said that a monk named Seiku, while practicing near the pond, encountered an old man with white hair. The man claimed to be Yamato Takeru and stated he resided in the mountains as a white swan. Following this legend, Seiku carved six statues of Kannon (Bodhisattva) and built a shrine on the northern bank of the pond. Historical records also note that an annual festival was held at the Rokkanon-do shrine every September 28th during the Edo period.
