Rokodo no Tsutsumi is a scenic landscape featuring beautiful waterways and cherry blossoms located in Ina City, Nagano Prefecture. Along a historic agricultural water channel developed during the late Edo period, approximately 120 cherry trees (primarily the Takato Kohigan variety) stand in a beautiful row. The greatest highlight is the 'Sakura Reflection' (Sakasa-zakura), where the vibrant pink blossoms are perfectly mirrored on the calm water surface on a peaceful spring day. With the white, snow-capped Central and Southern Alps rising majestically in the background, this scenery is a quintessential symbol of Japanese spring.
The history of this embankment dates back to 1848 (the first year of the Kaei era) during the Edo period. Naori Nariyasu, the lord of the Takato Domain at the time, ordered the construction of this waterway as part of a new land reclamation project to revitalize the domain's finances. The excavation of this nearly 10km long channel involved many local citizens. Legend has it that during the construction, workers shouted rhythmic calls like "Aa-san yo! (San'emon-san!)" to coordinate the ground-leveling work. Following its completion, the area saw the birth of Suehiro Village, and this infrastructure remains a vital part of the region's heritage today.
The primary attraction is the row of Takato Kohigan cherry trees that line the waterway. This variety is characterized by a deeper, more vivid pink color than the common Somei-yoshino, adding an intense splash of color to the landscape. On calm, windless days, the 'Sakasa-zakura' (inverted cherry blossoms) creates a highly photogenic moment that is truly spectacular. The contrast between the vivid pink petals and the white snow of the Alps is a unique experience found only in this specific location.
The best time to visit is typically from early April to mid-April, when the Takato Kohigan cherry blossoms reach full bloom. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during the morning when the light reflects beautifully off the water, or in the late afternoon when the soft sunlight illuminates the blossoms. Since the blooming period can fluctuate based on weather and temperature, it is highly recommended to check the latest bloom status before your trip.
Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll along the embankment, feeling the harmony between nature and history. Many travelers come equipped with cameras to capture the breathtaking sight of the cherry blossoms reflected in the water against the backdrop of the Alps. The surrounding area is a peaceful rural landscape, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and experiencing the traditional Japanese countryside.
The famous Takato Castle Park, one of Japan's premier cherry blossom destinations, is located nearby. It is only about a 10-minute drive from Rokodo no Tsutsumi, allowing you to enjoy a more profound experience of spring in the Ina region. The surrounding area is also a great base for driving tours or hiking through nature-rich landscapes.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes for your stroll. As temperatures can fluctuate in early spring, bringing a light jacket is useful. While the area is a public space and there are no entrance fees for the stroll itself, please be mindful of any costs if using local parking. When taking photos, please be respectful of other tourists and avoid disturbing local agricultural activities. As this is an active agricultural waterway, please do not enter the fields or step into the water.
