ROKKO Mori no Oto Museum is a specialized museum dedicated to automatic musical instruments, located on the beautiful Mt. Rokko in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. The museum focuses on automatic musical instruments from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These instruments were crafted using the highly advanced mechanical technology of their time and serve as precious historical records of musical evolution. The collection includes a diverse range of pieces reflecting global craftsmanship, including high-quality instruments from Switzerland and the United States.
Inside the museum, you can witness a wide variety of automatic musical instruments in action. Notable exhibits include the cylinder music box 'Sublime Harmony' made in Switzerland around 1880, and the 'Orchestral Regina Type 6' disk music box from the American Regina Company around 1900. Additionally, the collection features mechanical wonders like the 'Acrobat Pierrot' (1993, Swiss-made) automaton, as well as automatic pianos and violins, allowing you to experience the actual melodies played by these historical marvels.
You can enjoy the museum's exhibits and live concerts while feeling the changing seasons of Mt. Rokko. The SIKI Garden is particularly beautiful, showcasing various seasonal plants that complement the musical atmosphere. During the daytime, the museum hosts concerts where you can hear the authentic sounds of automatic instruments. Please note that the reception for activities closes at 16:00, so plan your visit accordingly if arriving in the late afternoon.
The museum offers engaging hands-on programs related to music. A signature activity is the 'Music Box Assembly Experience,' where guests can try their hand at the technical process of creating their own music box. There are two levels: the 'General Course' for a simple experience and the 'Advanced Course' for a more detailed production. Please note that the Advanced Course requires a prior reservation. Additionally, the museum shop offers unique items, such as the 'Kobe Music Box,' an original brand crafted by skilled artisans.
The museum is surrounded by various nature-rich facilities. A 5-minute walk away is the 'Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden,' which cultivates alpine plants from around the world and native species of Mt. Rokko. Nearby, you can also find athletic parks with barbecue areas, making it easy to enjoy both the natural beauty and the musical history of the region in one trip.
