Located on Mt. Rokko in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, the Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden utilizes the mountain's unique climate—reminiscent of southern Hokkaido—to cultivate alpine plants and flora from cold regions worldwide. The garden offers a stunning display of the changing seasons of Mt. Rokko. A special connection to Switzerland is felt throughout the grounds; the garden maintains a sisterhood with the Alpine Botanical Garden in Schynige Platte, Bern. This international influence is even reflected in the design of the trail signs, which mimic Swiss hiking paths, creating a unique atmosphere.
The garden holds a distinguished history with deep ties to the Japanese Imperial Family. In 1958, during his time as Crown Prince, the Emperor visited the garden, and the suspension bridge built during that era was named the "Prince's Bridge." Furthermore, in 1981, the Emperor visited the garden during a trip to Kobe. He expressed a profound interest in the colony of Enkousou (Japanese Primrose), leading to 30 specimens being donated and transplanted to the Imperial Palace's Fukiage Gyoen. Visitors can see monuments and commemorative trees planted by three generations of the Imperial Family, preserving this rich history.
The garden showcases a diverse collection of alpine and cold-region plants from across the globe. Thanks to the partnership with Schynige Platte in Switzerland, many elements of the garden evoke a Swiss alpine atmosphere. From the architectural design to the natural scenery, the garden provides a landscape that feels distinct from everyday life, allowing you to enjoy the changing colors of the seasons.
The garden is open from mid-March until November 29th. In the spring (around March to May), you can witness the budding and blooming of alpine flowers. Summer brings lush greenery, while autumn offers a breathtaking display of seasonal transitions. The operating hours are from 10:00 to 17:00, with the last admission at 16:30. Please note that hours may be extended during special events.
Beyond observing seasonal flora, visitors can enjoy walking along paths designed to resemble Swiss hiking trails. The garden often hosts seasonal events, including the hoisting of the Swiss cantonal flags and various seasonal decorations, adding to the international charm of the experience.
Mt. Rokko is home to several attractions, such as the ROKKO Mori no Ne Museum. You can often purchase combo tickets to visit both the botanical garden and the museum efficiently. Access to the surrounding area is easily managed via the Rokko Cable Car or the Rokko Arima Ropeway, making it a perfect part of a larger sightseeing itinerary.
As the garden is a natural environment, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. While credit cards and transportation IC cards (like Suica/Pasmo) can be used for ticket purchases, please verify specific payment methods upon arrival. The grounds are filled with historical monuments and beautifully designed paths that invite slow, mindful exploration.
