The Rokko Cable Car is a scenic cable car line operated by Kobe Rokko Railway, located in Nada-ku, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. Spanning a distance of 1.7 km, it rapidly ascends from an elevation of 244.2m to 737.5m at the summit. The most striking feature is its incredibly steep gradient of approximately 498‰ (about 26 degrees), providing a dynamic and exhilarating ride. The arrival point, Rokko Sanjo Station, serves as the gateway to the rich natural environment of the mountain peak.
The history of this route is deep, originally conceived as part of a transport system toward the Arima Onsen area. Early plans even considered a method of pulling carriages up via specialized platforms. Following various historical developments, including acquisition by Hanshin Electric Railway and recovery from the 1938 Hanshin Flood, the line evolved into its current form. The architecture of the Rokko Sanjo Station is particularly notable for its Art Deco design, which preserves the aesthetic of the founding era, adding significant historical value to the journey. As of April 2024, the operation has transitioned to a separation of facility ownership (Hanshin Electric Railway) and operational management (Kobe Rokko Railway).
The greatest thrill is the dynamic experience of traversing a nearly 500m elevation change in a very short time. Watching the two-car single-track train climb the steep slope is a sight unique to this region. Upon reaching the summit, visitors can enjoy the view from the historic station building and the surrounding mountain scenery. The area around the summit station also possesses a cultural dimension, hosting various seasonal events and concerts amidst the changing natural landscape.
Mt. Rokko offers diverse charms throughout the seasons. The period from March to May is perfect for viewing fresh greenery, while October and November are ideal for autumn foliage. Traveling during these times, when the air is particularly clear, allows for a more vivid and breathtaking view of the mountain path. While the standard service interval is 20 minutes, frequency increases to every 15 minutes during peak tourist seasons, allowing for flexible planning.
Reaching Rokko Sanjo Station is just the beginning of your mountain adventure. From here, you can easily connect to the Rokko Sanjo Bus or the Rokko Maya Sky Shuttle to reach higher altitudes or other nearby sightseeing spots. There is also an established route via bus that leads toward the famous Arima Onsen area. Whether it is a leisurely stroll through nature or participating in a summit event, the journey itself becomes a memorable part of your travel experience.
From Rokko Sanjo Station, buses allow access to more remote areas and the direction of the Rokko Arima Ropeway (Omote-Rokko Line). Additionally, near the lower station, you can access the Kobe city area (such as JR Rokkomichi or Hanshin Mikage) via Kobe City Bus routes (Lines 16 or 26). The cable car serves as a vital link between the urban areas of Kobe and the scenic mountain regions.
Since you are traveling into a mountainous area, it is highly recommended to bring a light jacket or extra layers to cope with changing weather and temperature drops.
