Rokka-no-Mori is a sprawling garden located in Nakatsunai Village, Hokkaido, themed around the beautiful wildflowers depicted on the iconic wrapping paper of the famous confectionery brand, Rokkatei. Within its 100,000 m² grounds, visitors can witness a stunning array of seasonal wildflowers such as Ezo Gentian, Spirea, and various lilies. This space, where nature and art seamlessly blend, serves as a southern destination for the Hokkaido Garden Path, offering travelers a sense of profound serenity and natural beauty.
The forest was born from a desire to create a space filled with the same flowers found on Rokkatei's wrapping paper. The grounds feature several unique structures, including a gallery built from a relocated traditional house from Croatia. Furthermore, the facility is recognized for its contribution to culture and the arts, having been certified by the "This is MECENAT" program by the Japan Community of Culture and Arts Organizations in 2025.
The garden is dotted with sculptures that appear to emerge naturally from the landscape, alongside several historic exhibition halls. Notable works include sculptures by artist Yu Bando and wildlife-themed pieces by Sanshiro Aoki, placed thoughtfully near forests and riverbanks. Visitors can also explore the "Flower Pattern Wrapping Paper Gallery" featuring Naoyuki Sakamoto's original art, the "Naoyuki Sketch Hall" showcasing sketches of pioneering life and mountain climbing, as well as the "Silo History Museum" and "Mountain Hall" for a multi-faceted cultural experience.
Rokka-no-Mori reveals a different face with every season. From spring to early summer, look for Katakuri lilies and Spirea; in summer, enjoy the Iris and Daylilies; and in autumn, observe the shifting colors of the vegetation. Opening hours vary by season; for example, from June to July, the garden opens at 9:00 AM. We recommend visiting in the early morning to experience the flowers and sculptures in a quiet, tranquil atmosphere.
The walking paths are designed for comfort, with some sections featuring wood chips to provide a soft, natural walking experience. You can relax at free spaces like "Hakurin" or at the various rest facilities, enjoying a coffee or Rokkatei products while immersed in the silence of nature. Searching for hidden sculptures or exploring the various galleries offers a uniquely meditative way to spend your time.
Around Rokka-no-Mori, you can find many spots to experience the rich nature of Nakatsunai. For instance, the "Michi-no-Eki Nakatsunai" (Roadside Station) is a short drive away, where you can find local agricultural products and specialties. For those seeking a deeper connection with the outdoors, nearby campsites and nature centers are also excellent options for your itinerary.
As the grounds are vast, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Since temperatures can fluctuate depending on the season, please bring a light jacket or layers. While cash and credit cards are accepted for admission fees, it is wise to check before visiting local shops.
