Robai no Sato is a specialized natural park located in Matsuida Town, Annaka City, Gunma Prefecture, dedicated to the beauty of Robai (winter jasmine). The park spans a vast 3.2 hectares and is home to 1,200 shrubs, totaling approximately 12,000 Robai plants. These flowers bloom even in the biting cold of winter, offering a striking display of yellow blossoms. The park features well-maintained walking paths, providing an ideal environment to immerse yourself in the natural scents and breathtaking scenery.
The local culture is deeply rooted in appreciating the subtle shifts of the seasons. The Robai plant is celebrated as a herald of the transition from the end of winter to the arrival of spring. This park has been carefully developed to allow visitors to observe this natural cycle firsthand. It serves as a vital location for balancing nature conservation with local tourism, hosting seasonal openings that celebrate the region's botanical heritage.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll along the established walking paths to observe the seasonal flora. The most iconic sight is the contrast of bright yellow Robai flowers blooming amidst a white, snowy landscape. The facility is equipped with essential amenities, including restrooms and small shops, ensuring a comfortable stay in a natural setting. During certain periods, you may also encounter local specialty markets where you can purchase regional produce and plants.
The park is typically open from late December to mid-February. The peak beauty occurs in January and February when the contrast between the snow and the yellow flowers is most dramatic. Opening hours are generally from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (or 5:00 PM). We recommend visiting during daylight hours to fully appreciate the colors and fragrance. Please note that the closing date may vary each year, so it is highly recommended to check the official status before your trip.
The primary activity is a nature walk. The well-maintained paths allow for an easy stroll through the 12,000 blooming Robai plants. Additionally, the park occasionally hosts local markets where visitors can purchase seasonal items such as cut flowers, seedlings, and local vegetables, offering a direct connection to the local community and its natural bounty.
Annaka City offers various other spots to experience Japanese history and nature. The area is dotted with historical routes related to the Nakasendo, as well as other botanical gardens and parks. There are also local accommodations and charming historical streets nearby, making it easy to plan a comprehensive sightseeing itinerary through the Gunma region.
Since the park is open during the coldest months, heavy winter clothing is essential. We strongly recommend bringing a thick coat, thermal wear, and non-slip shoes to navigate the snowy or icy paths safely. As this is a natural environment, please be mindful of your footing. For payments at the shop, please carry cash as many local facilities may not accept cards. While photography is permitted, please respect the natural environment and follow all park rules.
