Located in Aoi-ku, Shizuoka City, Rinzai-ji is a historic training temple known as the ancestral temple of the powerful Sengoku daimyo, the Imagawa clan. The most striking feature of this temple is its exclusivity; as a place of spiritual discipline, the inner sanctum and the deep, tranquil spaces of the grounds are only opened to the general public twice a year on specific dates. This provides a rare opportunity to witness the architectural splendor of the main hall, designated as a National Important Cultural Property, and the breathtaking scenic gardens that date back to the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
Rinzai-ji was founded by Imagawa Ujizane. Despite surviving the turbulent eras of conflict involving legendary figures like Takeda Shingen and Tokugawa Ieyasu, the temple has preserved its historical integrity. It is particularly famous as the place where Tokugawa Ieyasu, during his time as a hostage, devoted himself to study under the guidance of the eminent monk Taigen Sessai. The greatest attraction is the chance to see the architecture and gardens that are usually closed to the public. Rinzai-ji is not open for regular visitation throughout the year. It is open to the public only twice a year: on May 19th (the anniversary of the death of Imagawa Yoshimoto) and October 15th (aligned with the Marishiten Prayer Festival). Planning your visit around these specific dates is essential to experience the temple's full depth. During these special openings, the typical visiting hours are from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
