Renjuku and the Former Residence of Sugata Zan is a significant historical site related to Sugata Zan, a prominent Confucian scholar of the late Edo period. Designated as a Special Historic Site of Japan, the area preserves the functional structures of an educational institution from that era, including the buildings where Sugata Zan lived and worked, all set within a beautifully preserved natural environment. The grounds feature lecture halls, dormitories, a former residence, rice storehouses, and water channels, providing a vivid window into the educational structures of the Edo period.
During the late Edo period, after studying in Kyoto, Sugata Zan returned to his hometown in what is now Shinbe, Fukuyama City, to establish his private school, known as "Renjuku." This school also functioned as a local academy for the Fukuyama Clan, attracting students from across the country and becoming a major center for learning. The site reveals the architectural evolution of the era through various additions and modifications to the buildings. Additionally, the presence of a memorial hall housing the ancestral tablets of Sugata Zan's family highlights the close connection between personal life and the pursuit of scholarly excellence.

The seasonal blooming of roses is another highlight. We recommend visiting during the morning hours when it is relatively cool; this allows you to observe the architecture and gardens in a calm, tranquil atmosphere.

Walking through the water channels, ponds, and traditional garden areas offers a "living history" experience that goes beyond textbooks. As the site includes historical buildings, unpaved paths, and water channels, we recommend wearing comfortable, walking-friendly clothing. Shoes with good grip (such as sneakers) are highly recommended as some surfaces may be uneven.
