The Panorama Observatory is a spectacular viewpoint located at an altitude of approximately 580 meters on Mt. Ikoma, situated on the border between Osaka and Nara Prefectures. Positioned midway through the 'Shigi-Ikoma Skyline' driving route, it offers a vast, sweeping view of the Osaka Plain below. This location is prestigious, having been selected as one of the '100 Best Night Views in Japan,' famous for its dense, shimmering sea of city lights. The site features a dedicated observation plaza and parking lot, allowing visitors to step out of their vehicles and immediately immerse themselves in the breathtaking scenery.
The Shigi-Ikoma Skyline was developed as a mountain road connecting the Osaka and Nara regions, serving as a beloved driving route that highlights the natural beauty of the area. The Panorama Observatory is one of the most significant scenic points along this route. Historically, the views from the summit of Mt. Ikoma have been highly regarded for their clarity and beauty. The surrounding Ikoma area is a rich natural environment where the urban sprawl of the Kansai region meets serene mountain landscapes, creating a unique visual harmony.
The primary attraction is the immense urban panorama visible from 580 meters above sea level. During the day, under clear skies, you can observe the vast expanse of the metropolitan area, from towering skyscrapers to sprawling residential districts. On exceptionally clear days, the view may even extend to the distant Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. At night, the landscape transforms into a mesmerizing sea of light, characterized by the rhythmic patterns of major roads and streetlights stretching toward the horizon. The observation plaza includes resting areas where you can observe the complex urban structure from a high-altitude perspective.
The scenery changes dramatically depending on the season and time of day. During the day, the contrast between the blue sky and the dense urban landscape is striking. At dusk, you can witness breathtaking sunsets as the sky transitions through various colors. At night, the focus shifts to the brilliant, dense city lights. The view is particularly clear during seasons with low humidity. Please note that because of the altitude, temperatures tend to drop significantly during autumn and winter, so prepare accordingly.
This is a perfect spot to pause during a scenic drive. With an adjacent parking lot, you can easily stop your car to enjoy the view. The area is part of a larger scenic circuit; you can visit other notable spots like the 'Kane-no-Naru Observatory' along the same route to experience different perspectives of the night sky and landscape.

Since the observatory is at an altitude of 580m, it is cooler than the city below. We highly recommend bringing a warm jacket, especially when visiting during autumn, winter, or late at night.
Photography is permitted, but please be mindful of other visitors and ensure you do not obstruct traffic or parking.
While parking and an observation plaza are available, please check the local terrain for any steps or uneven surfaces.
The road is closed during non-operating hours, so please be mindful of the time if visiting at night. Operating hours may also change due to weather conditions.
