Oyama Park (Oyama Observatory) is a scenic high-altitude park located on Iroha Island in Matsuura City, Nagasaki Prefecture. The park is home to approximately 450 cherry trees, including Somei Yoshino, Hikanzakura (flowering cherry), and wild mountain cherries. In spring, the landscape is transformed by a sea of blossoms, creating a breathtaking contrast with the coastline of Iroha Island and the calm blue sea below. Uniquely, the park also features about 40 'October Sakura' trees, allowing visitors to experience the beauty of cherry blossoms even in autumn.
The park has been carefully maintained to preserve the natural landscape and showcase the seasonal beauty of local flora. The planting of various cherry tree species reflects a commitment to integrating the natural environment with the local scenery. Due to its unique geography on Iroha Island, the park maintains a harmonious view where the mountains, sea, and vegetation blend seamlessly.
The primary attraction is the dense clusters of Somei Yoshino, Hikanzakura, and mountain cherries that bloom in spring. From the high-altitude observatory, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding islands and the jagged coastline. The contrast between the soft pink blossoms and the deep blue of the ocean is a highlight of the spring season. Additionally, the presence of October Sakura provides a different, beautiful botanical experience during the autumn months.
Spring (around March to April) is the peak season when the Somei Yoshino and Hikanzakura are in full bloom, offering the most spectacular views. Autumn (around October) is also a special time to witness the blooming of the October Sakura. We recommend visiting during daylight hours when the sunlight makes the colors of the flowers and the sea appear most vivid.
The park features walking paths that allow you to stroll through the blossoms while enjoying the elevated views. It is an ideal place for a peaceful walk to observe the changing seasons through different varieties of cherry blossoms. As the facility is open 24 hours a day, you can enjoy the scenery at any time that suits your schedule.
The surrounding area features other beautiful natural spots, such as the Seika Mountain Observatory, Furozan General Park, and the scenic Tsuchiya Rice Terraces. The entire coastline offers a beautiful backdrop for your journey.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for the paths. Since this is an open outdoor environment, please prepare for the weather (sun protection for summer or warmth for spring/autumn). While there are no fees for the park itself, please carry cash or a card for nearby transportation or dining. English signage is limited, so we recommend checking a map in advance. No reservations are required for entry.
