The Daisen Circular Road is a scenic driving route that circles the base of Mt. Daisen in Tottori Prefecture. Mt. Daisen is famously known as 'Hoki Fuji' due to its beautiful, symmetrical silhouette, and it reveals a different face depending on the angle from which you view it. The route offers a continuous sequence of natural wonders, including rugged rock faces reminiscent of the Southern Alps, elegant mountain ridges, and one of the most significant primeval beech forests in Western Japan. You can experience the ever-changing landscapes of the mountain directly from the comfort of your vehicle.
The area surrounding Mt. Daisen has long been a center for mountain worship and spiritual practices. Daisen-ji Temple, a historic Buddhist temple of the Tendai sect, was founded during the Yao era (717–723) and flourished as a training ground for Shugendo practitioners. The region is also steeped in legend, with local topography and names often linked to historical events such as the Battle of Senjoyama during the Kamakura period, adding a layer of historical depth to the natural beauty.
This route features several spectacular sightseeing spots. At Daisen-ji Temple, you can admire the vermilion-colored structures and walk the longest stone-paved approach in Japan while gazing at the northern wall of Mt. Daisen. At Masumi Highland, a wide view of the mountain range alongside the Sea of Japan unfolds before you. Kakegawa Pass is a famous viewpoint where you can stand before the sheer cliffs of the southern wall of Mt. Daisen. The Higashi-Daisen Ohashi Bridge offers a high-altitude perspective of the landscape. Additionally, near Mt. Senjo, there is a park where you can enjoy the 'Manbon Sakura' (ten thousand cherry blossoms) during specific seasons.
The natural scenery changes beautifully with each season. From spring to summer, you can enjoy driving through fresh green beech forests and natural tunnels of vegetation. In autumn, the area around Kakegawa Pass transforms into a vibrant display of autumn colors. Near Mt. Senjo, you can also witness the late-blooming Yaezakura cherry blossoms. These seasonal shifts provide a dynamic and ever-changing backdrop for your journey.
There are several spots to stop and enjoy along the way. At 'Daisen Makiba Milk no Sato,' you can taste delicious soft-serve ice cream made with fresh local milk. In the Ikohira area, you can enjoy a barbecue featuring the premium 'Tohaku Beef,' a local brand beef. For those seeking more activity, there is a light trekking course through a forest path from Ikohira to Daisen Falls (approx. 40 minutes). If you plan to hike, it is highly recommended to submit a mountain climbing registration at the starting point.
The route includes various facilities for rest and accommodation, such as the National Vacation Village located in Kagari-nari. Daisen Falls, also a featured stop, is recognized as one of the '100 Best Waterfalls in Japan,' known for its impressive two-tiered drop of 37 meters. Nearby, you will also find historic shrines and temples, such as Daisen-ji and the Okumiya of Ogamiyama Shrine.
As this is primarily a driving route, most travel is done by vehicle. If you decide to walk to the waterfalls or go hiking, please wear comfortable walking shoes and appropriate outdoor clothing.
