Oyama Jinja is a historic Shinto shrine located in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. It enshrines the Kaga Clan lords, specifically Maeda Toshiie and his family, making it deeply intertwined with the history of Kanazawa. A unique feature of this shrine is that it stands on the former site of the 'Kanaya Goten,' the villa of the Kaga Clan lords. Consequently, the shrine grounds are filled with significant historical architecture and an exquisitely beautiful garden.
The site was originally the location of the Kanaya Goten, a villa used by the Kaga Clan. The 'Shin'en' garden, a stroll-style pond garden established between the late Edo and early Meiji periods, remains a site of high historical value. The shrine serves as a vital cultural hub, enshrining Maeda Toshiie, a symbol of the Kaga Clan, and his wife, Omatsu, preserving the legacy of Kanazawa's golden era.
One of the most iconic features is the 'Shinmon' (Shrine Gate), a National Important Cultural Property. Its heavy, dignified presence allows visitors to feel the weight of history. Additionally, the ceiling of the Haiden (Worship Hall) features a depiction of the legendary 'Udonge' flower painted with mineral pigments—a precious design transferred from the former Kanaya Goten. Visitors can also enjoy a serene moment wandering through the Shin'en garden, exploring islands and bridges named after elements of Gagaku (traditional imperial court music).
The Shin'en garden displays different expressions with each season. The way the islands and bridges reflect the light and wind changes throughout the day, offering a different atmosphere from bright daylight to the tranquil shadows of the late afternoon. The shrine also hosts monthly events, such as the 'Otsuitachi-mairi' held on the 1st of every month, adding to its seasonal charm.
Beyond simple worship, you can enjoy a contemplative stroll through the grounds. In the area known as the 'Musical Instrument Garden,' visitors can look for the origins of names like Hosho-jima, Biwa-jima, and Koto-bashi, which relate to Gagaku instruments. During certain periods, you may also experience the atmosphere of traditional festivals, such as those related to the Hyakumangoku Festival.
Located in the heart of Kanazawa, Oyama Jinja is surrounded by major landmarks such as Kanazawa Castle Park, Kenrokuen Garden, and the Higashi Chaya District. It is a very convenient stop while walking through the historic streets. Access from Kanazawa Station is easy via taxi or local bus.
When visiting, modest clothing suitable for a shrine is recommended. As the grounds contain stone paths and uneven surfaces, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please prepare cash for purchasing amulets (omamori) or offerings (gosharyo). If you wish to request a formal prayer (gokito), advance reservation via phone or internet is required.
