Oyama Afuri Shrine is a majestic shrine located on Mount Oyama (elevation 1,251m) in Isehara City, Kanagawa Prefecture. For centuries, this region has been a site of deep spiritual devotion, honoring the gods of water and mountains, as well as protective deities of the sea. The name 'Afuri' is said to derive from the constant presence of clouds and mist that shroud the mountain, creating a mystical atmosphere. As an independent peak overlooking the Kanto Plain, it has served as a spiritual cornerstone for the people of this region for generations.
The origins of the shrine date back over 2,200 years. Throughout its long history, the site has seen the fusion of Shinto and Buddhist traditions (Shinbutsu-shugo). During the era of the samurai, many Shoguns visited the shrine to pray for military success and long-lasting prosperity. The deep historical roots are further evidenced by the discovery of Jomon-period pottery fragments at the summit, marking this as an ancient site of human worship.
The shrine is characterized by its seamless integration with the natural landscape. The grounds change beautifully with the seasons, offering lush greenery in summer and vibrant autumn foliage.
