Otsuka Seiunji Historical Park is a beautifully maintained park located within the grounds of the historic Seiunji Temple in Inazawa City, Aichi Prefecture. This space is renowned for the harmonious coexistence of rich botanical life and profound cultural heritage. It is particularly famous during the early summer season when approximately 10,000 hydrangeas from 90 different varieties bloom, painting the landscape in vibrant colors. Visitors can enjoy the changing seasonal expressions of the flowers alongside ancient, historic structures.
The history of this site dates back approximately 1,200 years to the Konyo era (810–824), with traditions stating the temple was founded by the Buddhist master Kobo Daishi (Kukai). Throughout its long history, the temple has enjoyed the patronage of several notable figures, including Hojo Tokiyori, Ashikaga Takauji, Oda Sadamune, Asano Nagamasa, Matsudaira Tadayoshi, and Tokugawa Yoshioka. In 1992, portions of the temple grounds were developed into the current Otsuka Seiunji Historical Park, preserving the spiritual and historical significance of the site for future generations.
The park features numerous structures of high historical value. A primary highlight is the Main Hall (Hondo), a designated National Important Cultural Property. Said to have been built during the Keian era, the hall is a precious architectural specimen that retains many medieval structural elements. Inside the hall, you can find a 2.6-meter-tall pagoda, also a designated Important Cultural Property, which adds a sense of profound history to your visit. Other cultural assets, such as the Tahoto pagoda, are scattered throughout the grounds, allowing visitors to experience Japan's architectural heritage up close.
The absolute highlight of the park is the early summer season. Around June 1st, the "Inazawa Hydrangea Festival" begins, featuring a diverse collection of flowers ranging from traditional Japanese varieties like 'Kurenai' and 'Hanabi' to Western varieties like 'Annabelle.' Because the colors and blooming patterns vary by species, visiting during this early summer window is highly recommended for the best experience.
Visitors can enjoy observing the seasonal flora in a serene environment. During the hydrangea season, the sheer diversity of the 90 species offers a unique botanical experience. It is also an excellent place for cultural observation, where you can contemplate the intricate details of historic architecture and the peaceful atmosphere of a traditional Japanese temple grounds.
