Otsuka Kofun is a keyhole-shaped burial mound (zenpokoenfun) located in Keisen-machi, Fukuoka Prefecture, constructed in the early 6th century. It was discovered by chance in 1934 during soil excavation work. The most striking feature of this tumulus is the richly colored decorative murals on the walls of the stone chamber. The patterns, utilizing a diverse palette of red, yellow, green, black, white, and gray, are considered one of the pinnacles of Japanese decorated burial mounds due to their magnificent and luxurious appearance. In 1952, it was designated as a Special Historic Site of Japan.
The tumulus is believed to have been built during the early 6th century, the latter part of the Kofun period. The excavated artifacts, including horse trappings, weapons, bronze mirrors, ornaments, and pottery, reflect the social structure and culture of that era. As a highly significant decorated tomb, the patterns depicted on the walls—such as arrow quivers, shields, riders, bead patterns, and various geometric designs—serve as vital historical records of the artistic styles and spiritual beliefs of the time.

Please note that the interior of the stone chamber is generally not accessible to the public. It is only opened to the public twice a year, during special periods in spring and autumn. To see the actual interior of the stone chamber, it is essential to time your visit with these specific opening periods. The Otsuka Decorative Kofun Museum, the primary exhibition facility, is available outside these special periods for viewing exhibits and using multilingual audio guides.
At the Otsuka Decorative Kofun Museum, you can enjoy the exhibits through a multilingual audio guide service. The facility provides wireless LAN-based audio explanations that can be accessed via smartphones or tablets. The exhibits include realistic videos of the stone chamber and explanatory videos regarding the various kofun in the town, providing a visual and immersive way to learn about ancient history.
