It was discovered by chance in 1934 during soil excavation work. The most striking feature of this tumulus is the richly colored decorative murals on the walls of the stone chamber. The patterns, utilizing a diverse palette of red, yellow, green, black, white, and gray, are considered one of the pinnacles of Japanese decorated burial mounds due to their magnificent and luxurious appearance. In 1952, it was designated as a Special Historic Site of Japan.
