Overview & Charm

Otome Falls is a beautiful waterfall cascading from the Sawana River, located in the Itoshiro area of Nasu Shiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture. While relatively small, with a width of approximately 5 meters and a drop of about 10 meters, it is characterized by the harmonious beauty of its pure water flow and the surrounding natural environment. The air around the falls is exceptionally crisp and clean, making it a sanctuary that provides profound peace and relaxation to all who visit.

History & Cultural Background

There are several legends surrounding the beautiful name of this waterfall. According to local folklore, the name originates from the way the water flows, resembling the elegant hair or the silhouette of a young maiden. Stories of a young fisherman witnessing a beautiful maiden appearing above the falls, or even legends involving mermaids, have been passed down through generations, adding a layer of mystical cultural depth to the site.

Main Highlights

The greatest charm of Otome Falls is the purity of its water. There are spots where you can see behind the falling water, allowing you to feel the power and sound of the stream up close. It is also possible to descend an additional 30 meters toward the base of the falls to experience the scenery even more intimately.
