Otoke Falls is located along the Abukuma River, which flows between Sukagawa City and Tamakawa Village in Fukushima Prefecture. The name derives from the way the water flows in a shape resembling the Japanese character 'Ootsu' (乙). With a drop of 6 meters and a breathtaking width of 100 meters, it is often referred to as a 'Little Niagara.' This site is officially selected as one of 'Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls,' offering a perfect blend of natural splendor, historical depth, and cultural elements. The surrounding area is developed as a park, featuring cultural landmarks such as the Takimi Fudo-son Temple and a statue of Prince Shotoku.
The area holds deep historical significance. During the Edo period, under the rule of the Shirakawa Clan, there are records of villagers fishing for trout, salmon, and sweetfish (ayu) beneath the falls. Tradition dictated that the first catch of the season be presented to the clan lord, often accompanied by the presence of clan officials. Furthermore, the site is tied to the famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho. It is said that he visited this location and composed the poem, 'Samidare no taki furi uzumu mizu kasa kana' (The heavy rain falls upon the waterfall, making the water swell and swirl). A monument commemorating this poem stands near the falls, linking the natural scenery to Japan's rich literary heritage.
The most striking feature is the way the Abukuma River bends into a large 'Z' or 'Otsu' shape, creating a unique visual flow as the water cascades down. The vast 100-meter width provides a grand spectacle found nowhere else. Additionally, the presence of the Takimi Fudo-son Temple offers a sense of spiritual tranquility.
