Otaru Kibiikan is a unique destination located in Shukuku, Otaru City, Hokkaido, where history, architecture, and gastronomy converge. The site features the "Former Aoyama Villa," a registered tangible cultural property built during the Taisho era, which preserves the grandeur of the period when the herring-fishing industry brought immense wealth to the region. The expansive grounds include meticulously maintained gardens, allowing visitors to appreciate the intricate architectural details and the changing seasonal landscapes. The on-site restaurant serves local delicacies, most notably the famous "sweetly simmered herring (Nishin no Kanroni)," providing a way to enjoy fine dining within a deeply historic setting.
The core of this site, the "Former Aoyama Villa," was constructed by the Aoyama family, who amassed a vast fortune through the herring fishing industry. The design of the villa was influenced by the Honma House in Sata, Yamagata Prefecture, and took approximately six and a half years to complete starting from 1917. This architecture serves as a symbol of the lifestyle of the wealthy elite during the Taisho era and the flourishing culture of Hokkaido's fishing industry. In 2010, its historical significance was officially recognized when it was designated as a registered tangible cultural property of Japan. It is not merely a building but a vital cultural heritage that tells the story of Hokkaido's modernization and maritime history.
The primary attraction is the architectural style of the Former Aoyama Villa. Visitors can marvel at the luxurious decorations and the spatial layout that reflects the lifestyle of the era. The surrounding garden is another essential element; the scenery changes beautifully with each season, creating a harmonious view with the historic building. From the restaurant seating, guests can enjoy a panoramic view of the garden and the surrounding landscape, engaging both their visual and culinary senses to fully immerse themselves in the atmosphere.
The facility operates on different schedules depending on the season. From April to October, the facility is open from 9:00 to 17:00, and the restaurant operates from 10:00 to 17:00. From November to March, the closing time for both the facility and the restaurant is shortened to 16:00, so please check ahead of your visit. Additionally, from December 29 to December 31, the entry time changes to 9:00–15:00. Please note that the facility is closed from January 1 to January 7. The restaurant's food service hours are typically between 11:00 and 14:30.
Here, you can simultaneously enjoy a stroll through historic architecture and a meal made with local ingredients. A standout specialty is the "Nishin Oju" (herring box) or Nishin Soba using the famous "Sengoku-daki" (sweetly simmered) method, which offers a taste unique to this region. Seasonal bento boxes are also available, allowing you to dine in an elegant room while gazing at the scenery. Observing the fine details of the architecture while reflecting on the prosperity of the past is a truly one-of-a-kind experience.
Otaru City is home to many other historical buildings and tourist spots. The Kibiikan is conveniently located about 10 minutes by car from the Otaru Canal and 10 minutes from JR Otaru Station, making it an easy addition to an Otaru sightseeing itinerary.
