Otaki Limestone Cave is a stunning natural wonder located in Gujo City, Gifu Prefecture. The cave system spans approximately 2,000 meters in total, with about 700 meters of the route open for public exploration. The cave is named after the magnificent 30-meter high underground waterfall located deep within. To reach the entrance from the information center, visitors ride a unique wooden cable car—please note that the cable car service is currently one-way only.
Discovered in 1969 and opened for tourism in 1970, the cave holds significant historical value. Nearby, the Jomon Limestone Cave (managed by the same company) was once known as the Akuda Jigannado Cave. In 1970, during excavations at the upper level of the cave, Jomon and Yayoi period pottery and human remains were discovered. These findings proved that the site was used as a dwelling during the Jomon and Yayoi eras. Consequently, the site was opened as Jomon Limestone Cave in 1971 and is officially designated as a historical site of Gifu Prefecture.
The interior of the cave features a diverse array of geological formations. Key highlights include the 'Tenjokai' (Celestial World) stalactite group, the powerful 30-meter 'Otaki' waterfall, 'Kujaku no Mai' (Peacock Dance), 'Ten no Hashira' (Heavenly Pillar), 'Ivory Forest', and the 'Decoration Cake' formation. These natural sculptures offer a truly otherworldly atmosphere.
Otaki Limestone Cave is generally open throughout the year, except for weekdays in January and February, as well as the New Year holidays. Please note that the nearby Jomon Limestone Cave may operate without holidays during the summer season. We highly recommend checking the latest operational status and any seasonal changes before your visit to ensure a smooth trip.
The primary activity is walking through the cave to admire the geological formations. The experience begins with a ride on the wooden cable car from the information center. For those visiting the adjacent Jomon Limestone Cave, please note that it does not have permanent lighting, so visitors must use a provided flashlight to explore the multi-layered cave system. The surrounding area also features local eateries, souvenir shops, and fishing ponds.
Just a 3-minute drive from Otaki Limestone Cave is the Jomon Limestone Cave, an 800-meter long multi-layered labyrinth cave. The area around the information center is well-equipped with various facilities, including restaurants, shops, and recreational spots like fishing ponds.
