Otakinofukusho-ji is a temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect located in Ouchi, Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture. The mountain name 'Otakino' originates from the waterfall located within the temple grounds. In 1973, the surrounding area was designated as the 'Otakino Area' Local Natural Protected Area, meaning the temple sits within a beautifully preserved natural environment. It is also renowned as the 10th temple of the Setouchi 33 Kannon Pilgrimage and the 14th temple of the Sanyo Hana no Tera 24 Pilgrimage, attracting many worshippers since ancient times.

History & Cultural Background

The origins of the temple are traced back to the legend of its founding by Ganjin in the year 754 (Tenpyo-shoho era). Its long history is even documented in the 'Ruiju Kokushi,' a historical record compiled by Sugawara no Michizane during the Heian period. Although the temple has experienced several fires throughout history, it was restored during the Muromachi period through the devotion of Ashikaga Takauji. Today, the precious structures and cultural assets are carefully maintained and managed by three sub-temples: Jisso-in, Saiho-in, and Fukuju-in.

The most significant attraction is the 'Otakino Sanju-no-to' (Three-story Pagoda), a National Important Cultural Property. Believed to have been built in the mid-Muromachi period (1441), this majestic pagoda stands approximately 19.7 meters tall and features a distinctive tiled roof. Other must-see structures include the 'Nio-mon' Gate (an Okayama Prefectural Important Cultural Property) and the Main Hall, reflecting the deep faith of the Ashikaga Shogunate. The Main Hall itself was rebuilt by the lords of the Okayama clan during the Edo period. Additionally, the 'Tetsugan-ban Issukyo' is a significant cultural asset that speaks to the temple's profound historical value.
