Otako Coast is a breathtaking coastal area located in Nishiizu Town, Shizuoka Prefecture. This region is widely celebrated as a 'Town of Sunsets,' and Otako Coast stands out as a premier location, having been officially selected as one of 'Japan's Top 100 Sunset Locations.' The coastline is dotted with small islands, creating a dramatic backdrop for the setting sun. A unique highlight is the natural rock formations, such as the 'Megane-tcho' (spectacles rock) with its distinctive hole, which adds a sense of wonder to the landscape.
The Nishiizu area has a rich history deeply connected to the sea, with fishing and bonito (katsuo) processing being major industries from the Meiji to Showa eras. The Otako district also has a history of being active in shipbuilding-related industries. Today, the natural environment of this coast is protected as part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. This preservation ensures that the area remains a vital place for passing down the history and culture of the region through its stunning natural beauty, which is now a major draw for modern tourism.

The absolute highlight of Otako Coast is the spectacle of the sun descending toward the horizon. During the periods around the spring and autumn equinoxes, the sun appears to sink directly between the offshore islands, a phenomenon that attracts professional photographers and tourists from all over. The presence of unique rock formations like the 'Megane-tcho' creates a striking silhouette against the golden light. The constant change in sky color and the contrast with the sea throughout the day offers an unforgettable experience for every visitor.
For the most spectacular experience, plan your visit around the spring and autumn equinoxes. During these times, the sun aligns perfectly between the islands, creating a once-in-a-lifetime view. In the summer months (July to September), the area is also wonderful for enjoying the bright blue sea. To capture the best colors of the sunset, it is highly recommended to arrive at the coast 30 to 60 minutes before sunset to observe the gradual transition of light.

The primary activity here is landscape photography. Nishiizu Town frequently hosts photo contests, and spots like Otako Coast are highly coveted by enthusiasts. The area is also perfect for a relaxing stroll along the coast to enjoy the natural rock formations. Please note that as this is a natural environment, visitors should walk carefully and prioritize safety while exploring the shoreline.
There are many other fascinating spots near Otako Coast. Koganezaki is a nearby highlight where the cliffs glow golden under the sunset, offering views of Mt. Fuji. In Dogashima, you can enjoy scenic boat tours and explore the famous cave, Tensundo. Additionally, the area is dotted with local hot spring (onsen) facilities, allowing you to relax in warm waters after a day of sightseeing.
Access to Otako Coast is available via public transport or car. Free parking is available near the coast. Since temperatures can drop after sunset, we recommend bringing a light jacket.
