Otaguro Park is a city park located in Ogikubo, Suginami-ku, Tokyo, established on the site of a historic residence. The park was created following the wishes of the renowned music critic Motoo Otaguro, whose family donated the land to Suginami City with the request that a portion of the estate be preserved as a public park. The most striking feature of this park is its "Wayo Setchu" style—a harmonious blend of traditional Japanese stroll garden techniques and Western architectural elements. The park offers a unique space where nature and architecture coexist in perfect balance.
The park's history dates back to its opening on October 1, 1981. It was developed from the former residence of Motoo Otaguro, following his request to preserve the cultural legacy of his home. A key historical feature is the beautiful Western-style brick building constructed in 1933, which has been preserved as a memorial hall. This building serves as a testament to the cultural history of the area, bridging the past with the present.
The park features diverse landscapes that showcase the beauty of nature. The ginkgo tree avenue leading from the main gate changes colors with the seasons, welcoming visitors with golden hues. The garden is designed as a stroll garden, where every step along the path reveals a new view, such as the central pond, ancient large trees, and traditional Japanese garden layouts. The contrast between the Western-style brick memorial hall and the traditional Japanese garden creates a distinctive and elegant atmosphere found nowhere else.
While beautiful year-round, the park is particularly breathtaking during the autumn foliage season from October to November. The ginkgo trees and garden foliage turn vibrant colors during this time. Furthermore, from late November to early December, a special illumination event is held. During this period, the park extends its hours to allow visitors to experience the magical, ethereal sight of the autumn leaves illuminated against the night sky, offering a completely different atmosphere than the daytime.
Visitors can enjoy a relaxing time at the tea house or rest areas while gazing at the garden scenery. Beyond a simple walk, you can experience the cultural atmosphere by visiting the memorial hall. The stroll-style layout ensures that your walk around the pond and through the various plantings is a dynamic experience of changing landscapes.
The park is situated in a quiet residential area of Suginami. Nearby facilities, such as the Suginami City Local Museum, offer further opportunities to explore the local history. The park is easily accessible from JR Ogikubo Station, making it a perfect destination to combine with a visit to nearby cafes and restaurants in the area.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, such as sneakers, as the paths follow the natural terrain of the garden. While the park is well-maintained, some areas may have uneven surfaces. There is no need for reservations to enter the park, but for special events like the autumn light-up, we recommend checking the official website in advance.
