Osawa Mine, located in Kazuno City, Akita Prefecture, is a site of copper ore extraction with a history spanning 1,300 years. Recognized as a significant piece of Japan's modern industrial heritage, the site features massive structures such as towering chimneys and ore processing facilities that once supported large-scale mining operations. The sheer scale of the topography and the remaining structures allow visitors to feel the immense power of the industry that once thrived here.
In addition to copper, this region produced gold, silver, lead, and zinc. A pivotal era of development occurred under the management of the Mitsubishi conglomerate starting in 1889, leading to the extraction of vast mineral resources. Although the mine closed in 1978, the remaining buildings and equipment serve as vital historical records of the industry that fueled Japan's modernization. Today, the site is primarily used for educational purposes, such as school excursions and specialized training.
The most striking feature of Osawa Mine is its vast industrial ruins. The tall, slender concrete chimneys and the massive ore processing plants built along the mountain slopes visually demonstrate the immense scale of past mining operations. Furthermore, at the Kazuno City Mining History Museum, visitors can observe precious ore samples, historical documents from the Edo period, and models of mine shafts, providing a deep understanding of the technology and labor methods of the time.
Operating hours vary depending on the season. During the summer season (April 1 to October 31), the facility is open from 9:00 to 17:00. During the winter season (November 1 to March 31), hours are 9:00 to 15:30. Please note that the facility is closed every Wednesday during the winter period (excluding holidays and New Year's). For the best experience of the industrial landscape, clear sunny days are recommended when the textures of the ruins are most visible.
Currently, the site operates strictly on a complete reservation system for groups, such as school trips, field studies, and professional training sessions. Through guided tours of the mine shafts and facilities, participants can learn about the crucial role of mining in Japan's modernization and the advanced extraction technologies used during that era. Please note that the site is not open for general individual sightseeing but is intended for organized educational groups.

As the site consists of former mining areas and industrial ruins, the terrain can be uneven and unstable. We recommend wearing comfortable, sturdy clothing and shoes suitable for walking on irregular surfaces. Since the facility operates exclusively for educational groups, you must complete the reservation process in advance via the prescribed methods (such as FAX or email). When visiting, please follow all staff instructions to ensure safety and respect the rules of this educational site.
