The Osaka City Museum of Art is located within Tennoji Park in the Tennoji Ward of Osaka. Opened in 1936 (Showa 11), the museum was built on land donated by the Sumitomo family. The building itself is a significant attraction, designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan, characterized by its heavy, dignified, and historical architectural style. The history of this facility traces back to the Sumitomo family residence built on this site in 1914. Later, the land, along with the Keisakuen Japanese garden, was donated by the Sumitomo family specifically for the construction of the museum, leading to its opening in 1936. The construction process was notably affected by the Great Depression, taking approximately 10 years to complete. The building also holds a complex history, having been used by the army and as a base for occupation forces during World War II. In 2015, its architectural value was officially recognized when it was registered as a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property. Today, it is operated by the Osaka City Museum and Art Gallery Organization.
