Orizuru Tower is a multi-purpose tourism facility standing approximately 100 meters tall, located immediately east of the Atomic Bomb Dome in central Hiroshima. Opened in 2016, the tower is themed around the 'Orizuru' (folded paper crane), a symbol of peace, and is designed to represent the 'Past, Present, and Future' of Hiroshima. The architecture, designed by Hiroshi Sambuichi, features a distinctive exterior adorned with illustrations of paper cranes. The rooftop offers an open-air observation space with a stunning view of the Hiroshima cityscape and even the Seto Inland Sea.
The facility was established to promote tourism around the Atomic Bomb Dome area while serving as a hub for sharing messages of peace and regional industry. Because it is located within the buffer zone of the World Heritage site (the Atomic Bomb Dome), strict attention was paid to the landscape and architectural design to ensure it complements the historical surroundings. It also functions as a space for peace education, where visitors can participate in activities like folding paper cranes to express their wishes for a world without nuclear weapons.
There are several unique spots within Orizuru Tower. On the 12th floor, the 'Orizuru Plaza' features an interactive exhibit where you can fold a crane using special origami paper and release it into the 'Orizuru Wall,' a glass-walled void. The rooftop, 'Hiroshima no Oka,' is an open-air space without windows, allowing you to feel the breeze while enjoying a nearly 360-degree view of the Peace Memorial Park, the Atomic Bomb Dome, and Hiroshima Castle. Additionally, the 1st floor houses the souvenir shop 'SOUVENIR SELECT Hito to Ki' and the 'PARK SIDE Cafe,' where you can experience local Hiroshima culture.
The appearance of Orizuru Tower changes depending on the season and time of day. The evening and night views are particularly striking, as the city lights blend with the quiet atmosphere of the Peace Memorial Park. Since the rooftop is an open-air space, accessibility may change based on weather or wind conditions. On clear days, you can expect a wide view reaching toward the Seto Inland Sea. The building is also designed with louvers and wind catchers to ensure good ventilation during the summer months.
During your visit, be sure to try the 'Orizuru' experience. Folding a crane and releasing it into the glass wall is a unique way to visualize a message of peace. At the 1st-floor cafe, you can enjoy coffee and local Hiroshima ingredients while gazing at the scenery. The building also features a spiral ramp called 'Sanpo-zaka' (Walking Slope) that connects the 1st floor to the rooftop, which includes a slide that children can enjoy, making it a great destination for families.
The tower is located in the heart of Hiroshima's most significant historical area, right next to the Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome. Hiroshima Castle and Hiroshima Castle Park are also within walking distance, allowing you to explore both historical architecture and modern urban landscapes. The proximity to major commercial facilities and restaurants also makes it an ideal spot for a break or shopping during your sightseeing tour.
As the rooftop observation deck is an open-air space, you will feel the wind directly. It is a good idea to bring a light jacket or rain gear to prepare for weather changes. Please note that the rooftop may be closed during strong winds or bad weather. While the building is equipped with barrier-free features like ramps, please be careful when moving toward the rooftop area. Payments at the 1st-floor shop and cafe can be made via cash, credit cards, or various IC cards. English signage and staff support are available to assist visitors.
