Located halfway up Mt. Orihime in Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture, Orihime Shrine is an impressive site characterized by its striking vermilion-painted main hall. Historically, the shrine has been revered as the guardian deity of the local weaving industry, which has long been a cornerstone of the region. Today, it is widely beloved as a 'sacred site for matchmaking' and a popular 'Lovers' Sanctuary.' The shrine offers a magnificent panoramic view of the vast Kanto Plain, a vista so beautiful it has been officially recognized as part of the 'Japan Nightscape Heritage.' Surrounded by the changing colors of the seasons and occasionally illuminated at night, the shrine offers a captivating experience both day and night.
The area has a long history of textile production, and Orihime Shrine has served as the protector of Ashikaga's weaving industry for centuries. According to local tradition, the deity of weaving was invited to the site in 1705 (the second year of the Hoei era). The shrine's history is deeply intertwined with the industrial development of the region, including a relocation from Yakumo Shrine in 1879. The shrine grounds are generally open to the public at any time. However, because there are 229 stone steps to climb, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you wish to receive Goshuin, seek blessings, or participate in ceremonies, please check in advance as reservations or specific procedures may be required. Please be aware that there have been reports of wild boars in the area; please stay alert and enjoy the views from a safe distance.
