The Ontake Panorama Line refers to the section of Gifu Prefectural Road 441 (Nigorigo Onsen Line) that connects Kosaka Town in Gero City to Nigorigo Onsen. The greatest highlight of this route is the ability to gaze upon the majestic and sacred Mount Ontake directly from your vehicle. Along the way, you can also witness the spectacular sight of Japan's longest lava flow, making this a journey of observing profound natural formations. The route is strategically set to run just below the mountain ridges, tracing the border between Gero and Takayama cities.
Historically, this route was known as the "Prefectural Road Ochiai Hida-Kosaka Station Line." Following a route change on March 24, 2017, it was renamed the "Prefectural Road Nigorigo Onsen Line," with its starting and ending points updated. Today, it is a well-maintained scenic route starting near Ochai in Kosaka Town and leading toward the famous Nigorigo Onsen. This region has a long history of tourism centered around its natural environment and hot spring culture.
The primary attraction is the view of Mount Ontake. The silhouette of the sacred mountain, located to the east of the starting point, offers a different expression depending on the season and weather. The geography of the route is also a highlight, featuring sections that follow the Kosaka River and a series of winding curves through mountainous terrain that create a dynamic landscape. Near the end of the route, the Hida River (a tributary of the Kiso River) provides additional scenic beauty.
The recommended time to visit depends on the season. In early summer, the lush greenery is vibrant, while in autumn, the mountains are draped in brilliant colors. The autumn foliage season is particularly spectacular and highly recommended for a scenic drive. Because the route is quite winding due to the mountainous terrain, it is highly recommended to drive during daylight hours for safety and visibility.
The primary experience here is the drive itself. The process of traveling toward Nigorigo Onsen is an activity of enjoying the changing landscape. Additionally, the surrounding area features locations used for high-altitude training and various campsites that utilize the natural environment, allowing you to plan a drive that leads to an outdoor adventure.
Near the end of the route lies Nigorigo Onsen, one of Japan's highest-altitude hot spring areas. The surrounding area also features Mount Ontake climbing routes and the nature-rich Kurumajima Campground. These locations are perfect destinations to visit after your scenic drive.
Driving through mountain passes requires caution. Many sections are single-lane and feature sharp curves; please drive carefully. Note that large buses (over 8 meters) are not permitted on this route.
