Onomichi Shotengai (Onomichi Honmichi Shotengai) is one of Japan's most significant shopping districts, stretching approximately 1.2 km in length. It is composed of five distinct areas: Fumiko-dori, Naka Shotengai, Honmachi Center-gai, Enomachi-dori, and Onomichi-dori. Along these streets, you will find about 210 diverse establishments, ranging from gourmet restaurants and sweet shops to cafes, fashion boutiques, accessories, lifestyle goods, and even beauty and healthcare shops. It is a place where you can truly feel the nostalgic atmosphere of Onomichi, a historic port town.
Onomichi has flourished as a prosperous port city since ancient times. The shopping district itself is a pillar of the local culture, boasting more than 10 long-established shops that have been in business for over 100 years. The landscape is dotted with historical architecture that tells the story of the region's development. For instance, the Onomichi-dori area is known for its historical significance, and in 2004, efforts were made to preserve the local scenery through arcade renovations and the maintenance of traditional stone-paved paths.

Near the Naka Shotengai area, you can find peaceful spaces like the greenery of the Commercial Chamber of Commerce Memorial Plaza, perfect for a short rest. Onomichi Shotengai is conveniently located near major sightseeing spots. It is within walking distance from JR Onomichi Station and is close to the Senkoji Ropeway, Onomichi City Hall, and the scenic Kaigan-dori area. The surrounding area also features various parking lots, accommodation facilities, and hot spring-related amenities, making it an ideal base for your travels.
Because the area features stone-paved paths and narrow alleys, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. While some shops may accept cashless payments, many traditional establishments may still require cash, so it is wise to carry some Japanese Yen.
