Onogawa Fudo Falls is a breathtaking 25-meter waterfall located upstream of Lake Onogawa in Kitashiobara Village, Fukushima Prefecture. The site is named after Fudo Myoo, a Buddhist deity enshrined in the area, adding a layer of spiritual significance to the landscape. The water flowing here is supplied by the Bandai Kogen springs and is recognized as one of the "100 Best Water Sources in Japan" (Meisui Hyakusen). Visitors can experience the raw power of nature through a well-maintained walking path that leads directly to the base of the falls.
The area possesses a unique industrial heritage. The current walking trail was built along the former tracks of a forest locomotive (torokko) used for timber transport. Near the waterfall, you can still see the stone masonry remnants of an old bridge, serving as a silent testament to the area's industrial past. Furthermore, because Fudo Myoo is enshrined nearby, the site has long been a place of spiritual devotion and a destination for those seeking connection with the divine through nature.
The centerpiece of the experience is the sight of the water plunging 25 meters down the rock face. The volume of water is particularly impressive from late April to early May, when the spring snowmelt increases the flow. Beyond the waterfall itself, the journey along the trail offers a fascinating look at the stone ruins of the former forest railway, providing a sense of history that complements the natural beauty. The surrounding environment is filled with the soothing sounds of clear, flowing water and lush greenery.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. In spring (late April to early May), the waterfall is at its most powerful due to snowmelt. In summer, the deep green foliage and the cool mist from the falls provide a refreshing escape from the heat. Autumn brings a spectacular display of colorful changing leaves, painting the landscape in vibrant hues. In winter, the area can be used for snowshoe trekking; however, it is highly recommended to join a guided tour rather than attempting to explore the area independently due to safety concerns.
The primary activity is trekking along the Onogawa Fudo Falls exploration path, which is approximately 1 km long. The walk from the parking lot to the waterfall takes about 20 to 30 minutes one way. Please note that the trail involves an elevation gain of about 70m and includes several steep stairs, making it a great way to experience a natural workout. While popular for hiking, the area is also used for more specialized activities like stream climbing in summer or snowshoeing in winter.
Lake Onogawa sits just upstream from the falls, and the surrounding Bandai Kogen and Urabandai areas are popular destinations for sightseeing. The region is ideal for travelers who enjoy scenic drives and hiking through pristine natural landscapes.
While the path is maintained, it features steep stairs and uneven natural terrain, so sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots are essential. If visiting in winter, specialized gear like snowshoes is required. Please carry cash for any nearby facilities or emergencies.
