Onioshidashi Park, located in Tsumagoi Village, Gunma Prefecture, is a breathtaking scenic area that preserves the profound traces of volcanic activity. The landscape was shaped by the massive lava flows that solidified following the devastating Tenmei eruption of 1783. Within this vast area, visitors can witness a stunning contrast between the harsh, jagged textures of volcanic rocks and the delicate beauty of alpine plants and greenery that have taken root in the terrain.
The scenery here is a direct result of the Great Tenmei Eruption of Mount Asama in 1783. Historical records describe how intense volcanic activity sent massive amounts of pyroclastic flows and lava across the region, causing significant damage to surrounding settlements. The current landscape serves as a living monument to the power of nature and the history of regeneration. Additionally, the Senjojin Kannon-do shrine is located within the park. This facility was established to offer prayers for the victims of the Mount Asama eruption, making it a site of great historical and spiritual significance.
The park is filled with massive lava formations that symbolize the history of volcanic activity. Often referred to as "Lava Art," these complex, natural sculptures offer a sight unlike any other. The seasonal changes in vegetation are also a key attraction. For instance, from May to July, the landscape comes alive with alpine plants such as SchizAEA (Iwakagami), Pieris japonica (Tsugazakura), and various azaleas, creating a vibrant color contrast against the monochromatic, inorganic texture of the rocks.

The area around Onioshidashi Park is rich in natural beauty. Nearby, the Tsumagoi Local History Museum provides deeper insight into the history of the Tenmei eruption and the region's subsequent recovery.
