The Oniki Rice Terraces are a vast expanse of terraced fields located in the southeastern part of Hasami Town, Nagasaki, at the foot of the Kokuzo volcano. Spanning an impressive 22 hectares, the sight of 400 terraced paddies overlapping creates a breathtaking view that has earned its place among the '100 Best Terraced Rice Fields in Japan.' The rhythmic curves of the paddies, following the natural contours of the land, offer a mesmerizing display of geometric beauty that leaves visitors in awe.
This region has a long history of traditional agriculture. The terraced fields were meticulously carved into the natural terrain over generations, preserving a landscape that is both a functional agricultural site and a vital piece of local cultural heritage. These fields represent the enduring way of life and the deep connection between the local community and the land.
There are several specific spots to enjoy the view. There are two main observation points equipped with parking lots, allowing visitors to look down upon the vast expanse of the paddies from an elevated perspective. Additionally, the nearby 'Oniki Water Source Forest' offers a chance to experience the richness of the local natural environment. For those interested in local products, the 'Oniki Processing Center' serves as a local hub where you can find specialty items such as locally grown terraced rice.
The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons. The most spectacular time is mid-September, when the rice ears turn a brilliant golden color. During this period, the striking contrast between the golden fields and the deep red of the blooming spider lilies (Higanbana) creates a world-class photographic opportunity. You may also see many 'scarecrows' displayed during the Oniki Tanada Festival. Another beautiful time is late May, during the 'water-filling' stage, when the paddies act as mirrors reflecting the sky and clouds.
Beyond photography, visitors can immerse themselves in the surrounding nature. The 'Oniki Water Source Forest,' located further up into the mountains from the terraces, allows you to observe the natural water flow and pristine environment. At the Oniki Processing Center, you can experience the local food culture by purchasing fresh products like terraced rice, directly supporting the local agricultural community.
The area around the Oniki Rice Terraces is surrounded by lush, untouched nature. The Water Source Forest is a great spot for observing the natural water cycles. Furthermore, the entire town of Hasami is famous for its ceramics (pottery) production, making this a wonderful area to experience both natural landscapes and traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
To enjoy the views, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Since the observation points are best accessed by car, ensure you have a vehicle ready. Please note that cash is required for purchases at local stalls. When taking photos, please be respectful of the farmers and avoid interfering with ongoing agricultural work.
