The Onga River Riverside is a vast riverside park spanning Nakama City and Nogata City in Fukuoka Prefecture. Commonly known as "Nogata Riverside Park," it features well-maintained grassy lawns, large playground equipment, and walking paths. The two sides of the riverbank are connected by small bridges positioned close to the water level, allowing visitors to feel the gentle flow of the river as they move through the area. It is an open, refreshing space where natural beauty meets recreational facilities.
The Onga River played a vital role during the Meiji era. It was once a crucial logistics hub where riverboats known as "Kawahirata" transported coal from the Chikuho coalfields to Wakamatsu Port. At one time, the coal produced in this region supplied nearly half of Japan's total coal consumption. Today, the river has transitioned from an industrial transport route into a peaceful sanctuary for relaxation and nature observation.
The park is dotted with spots that showcase the vibrant colors of nature. In spring, it is a famous spot for cherry blossoms and, depending on the timing, beautiful tulips. In summer, the riverbank is adorned with approximately 200,000 sunflowers, while in autumn, a 3,200-square-meter area blooms with cosmos flowers. The low-lying bridges provide a unique way to experience the riverside scenery up close.
The landscape changes beautifully with each season. Visit in Spring (March–April) for cherry blossoms and tulips, Summer (August) for the massive sunflower fields, or Autumn for the cosmos. Daytime is ideal for recreation and jogging on the lawns. At dusk, you can enjoy a tranquil view of the river alongside the nearby railway scenery, such as the Chikuho Main Line Onga Bridge.
The vast grassy areas are perfect for family picnics and children playing on the large playground equipment. The well-maintained paths are also popular for daily exercise like walking and jogging. It is an ideal place to refresh your mind while surrounded by seasonal flowers and the sounds of the river.
Nearby, you can explore local history and culture at the Nakama City Historical and Folklore Museum or the Nakama City Regional Exchange Center. For those heading toward Nogata, there are several cultural spots including Art Space Tanio, Nogata Saijikan, and the Nogata City Coal Museum, which preserves the history of the local coal industry.
As this is a large outdoor area, please dress according to the weather. Comfortable clothing and walking shoes are highly recommended. While the park is an open space, please be mindful of others and follow local etiquette.
