The Onga River Water Source Pump Station, located in Mizuma City, Fukuoka Prefecture, is a facility designed to transport water from the Onga River. Today, it serves as a place where visitors can learn about its history and structural design through the observation deck and the information center. While entry into the actual facility is restricted, the designated observation space allows you to view the exterior and appreciate the engineering that once supported the region's vital industries.
This facility was constructed to secure industrial water for steel manufacturing. Its primary role was to transport massive quantities of water from the Onga River to steelworks, playing a crucial role in the region's industrial development for many years. Currently, it serves as a historical monument, featuring displays such as photographs and models that illustrate the operations during its peak years.
The primary highlight is the view of the pump station's exterior from the observation deck. This area is equipped with explanatory signage and design benches for relaxation. Additionally, the adjacent Information Center offers a deep dive into history with exhibits featuring vintage photographs, excavated bricks, cast iron pipes, and scale models. A particularly unique feature is the 3D scanning video footage, which allows visitors to visually understand the internal structure of the building without entering the restricted area.
The observation deck is accessible for viewing at any time. On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays (excluding the New Year holidays), professional tour guides are available to provide detailed explanations. Listening to a guide can significantly deepen your understanding of the facility's historical significance. Please note that guide services may be suspended due to weather conditions, so it is recommended to check the status before your visit.
At the Information Center, you can explore historical exhibits and shop for local products at the souvenir shop. For those wishing to explore the surrounding area, electric bicycles are available for rent (fee required). The observation deck offers a peaceful space to sit on a bench, enjoy the scenery, and observe the historic architecture at your own pace.
