Onataike is a breathtaking circular crater lake located at an altitude of 1,241 meters in Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. Formed by ancient volcanic activity, this lake is nestled within a deep, lush forest, creating a mystical and sacred atmosphere. The striking contrast between the water and the surrounding greenery offers a sense of awe and serenity. As a protected natural area, it is a precious spot where visitors can escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and reconnect with the raw energy of nature.
The lake was formed within a volcanic crater, a testament to the dynamic geological history of the Kirishima mountain range. This region is renowned for its volcanic activity, and Onataike stands as a living symbol of this natural evolution. For many years, the area has been carefully preserved as a natural park, serving as an important landscape resource that showcases the wonder and power of the Earth's natural processes.

The primary attraction is the crater lake itself, a perfectly shaped circular body of water sitting high above sea level. The view of the deep forest surrounding the lake is truly spectacular. To allow visitors to enjoy the scenery without damaging the ecosystem, wooden boardwalks have been installed around the perimeter. This allows for a peaceful stroll while enjoying the crisp, high-altitude air and the changing colors of the vegetation throughout the seasons.
While the area is accessible year-round, it offers different charms in every season. From spring to summer, the surrounding forests are vibrant and full of life. In autumn, the foliage turns into a rich tapestry of colors, making the landscape even more breathtaking. Because the light and sky reflected in the lake change significantly depending on the weather, we recommend visiting during the daytime on clear days when the sunlight hits the water most beautifully.

The most popular activity here is a 'nature walk.' By walking along the well-maintained wooden paths, you can observe the unique volcanic topography up close. It is an ideal place for mindfulness—breathing in the pure, high-altitude air and enjoying the silence. Since it does not require intense mountain climbing, it is perfect for nature observation and photography enthusiasts looking for a peaceful connection with the environment.
The area surrounding Onataike is part of the grand Kirishima mountain range. Nearby, you can explore historical sites like Kirishima Jingu Shrine and various hot spring (onsen) resorts. A popular travel plan is to enjoy a hike or a scenic drive through the mountains and then relax in a local hot spring. Combining the natural energy of the crater lake with the rich food culture and hot spring experiences of Kirima makes for a truly fulfilling trip.
Because the lake is located at 1,241m, temperatures are significantly lower than at sea level. Regardless of the season, please bring a warm jacket or layers for protection against the cold. While there are paths, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes or hiking shoes for a safe experience.
