Onagawa is renowned as the holy land of silver salmon, maintaining the highest production volume in Japan for over 30 years. Approximately 60% of Japan's total silver salmon production originates from this area, making it the backbone of the local food culture. Seapalpier Onagava plays a vital role in preserving and promoting the value of this local treasure to future generations. The facility has also evolved as a symbol of reconstruction and a new landmark for the town following the Great East Japan Earthquake.
The facility hosts a variety of unique shops. A standout is the "Onagawa Gin-sake (Silver Salmon) Public Relations Center," where you can enjoy authentic flavors like charcoal-grilled silver salmon sets or fresh sashimi. Additionally, the adjacent "Hama Terrace" offers several shops featuring seasonal seafood, sweets, and local specialties, all while providing a relaxing view of the ocean. The modern, stylish architecture of the building itself is another major attraction for visitors.
While Seapalpier Onagawa is enjoyable year-round, it is especially wonderful when visiting during the peak seasons for silver salmon and seasonal seafood. Depending on the day, some shops even open as early as 07:00 on weekends and holidays, allowing you to enjoy breakfast with the crisp morning sea air. Visiting in the late afternoon is also highly recommended to witness the beautiful sunset over the ocean.
Beyond shopping, you can deeply engage with Onagawa's food culture. At the Silver Salmon specialty shops, you can witness the high quality of the ingredients and the aroma of charcoal-grilled delicacies. The surrounding area, including the brick road and station plaza, is perfect for a leisurely stroll, allowing you to experience the local culture through a "food walk" of various local treats.
The facility is conveniently located adjacent to the "Brick Road" (Renga-michi) leading from Onagawa Station, making it easily accessible on foot. The surrounding area features well-maintained parks and plazas with wide views of the sea, making it an excellent route for walking and exploring the coastal landscape.
As a seaside facility, please dress appropriately for the season. We recommend hats and sunglasses for summer sun protection, and warm clothing to guard against the sea breeze in winter. For payments, while many shops accept credit cards and electronic money, it is wise to carry cash for certain smaller vendors. The facility is barrier-free and accessible, though please be mindful of others during busy hours.
