Mt. Omuro is a stunning scoria cone standing 580 meters above sea level, located in Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture. As a designated geosite within the Izu Peninsula UNESCO Global Geopark, it serves as a prominent landmark for the Izu, Ito, and Izu Kogen areas. This site is a national natural monument, celebrated for its unique, smooth volcanic shape. From the summit, visitors are treated to a magnificent 360-degree panoramic view that includes the iconic Mt. Fuji and the beautiful Izu Islands. This breathtaking scenery has even received the Shizuoka Prefecture Landscape Award and is cherished as one of the 'Eight Views of Ito'.
Formed by volcanic activity, Mt. Omuro is a scoria cone that has maintained a harmonious relationship with nature for centuries. A significant cultural tradition is the 'Yamayaki' (mountain burning), which has been passed down for over 700 years. Held every year on the second Sunday of February, this ritual involves controlled burning to cultivate high-quality Japanese silver grass (kaya). This practice prevents excessive tree growth, preserving the mountain's distinctive grass-covered appearance and unique silhouette. Geologically, it is a highly significant part of the Eastern Izu Volcanic Group.
The greatest draw of Mt. Omuro is the grand vista from the summit. A scenic mountain lift takes you to the top in about 6 minutes, offering an unobstructed view of the landscape. Once at the summit, you can walk the 'Ohachi-meguri' (crater rim walk), a circular trail of approximately 1 km that allows you to feel the dramatic curves of the terrain. The area also hosts activities such as archery near the crater remnants, utilizing the natural topography. The changing seasons bring different expressions to the mountain, from seasonal flowers to shifting colors of the grass.
Mt. Omuro reveals a different face in every season. In spring, you can enjoy cherry blossoms around the 'Sakura no Sato' area and the foot of the mountain. Summer and autumn offer lush green landscapes. For the best experience, visit on a clear morning when the visibility is highest, providing a sharp and vivid view of Mt. Fuji. Additionally, the annual February mountain burning offers a rare chance to witness the dynamic power of fire and tradition. The journey to the summit is an experience in itself via the mountain lift, offering a relaxing aerial view of the surroundings. After arriving, the 'Ohachi-meguri' walk allows you to experience the geopark's topography up close. Near the crater, visitors can even try activities like archery. At the foot of the mountain, there are shops where you can enjoy lunch featuring local Izu ingredients and browse specialty products unique to the Izu and Ito regions.
The base of Mt. Omuro is adjacent to several tourist attractions, such as the Shaboten Kaen (Cactus Park). The nearby Izu Kogen area is a popular hub for travelers, featuring numerous accommodation facilities and restaurants. A common itinerary involves exploring the natural parks and dining in the area after visiting the mountain.
The summit can be quite windy and may feel cooler than the ground level. It is highly recommended to bring a windbreaker or a light jacket regardless of the season. While the summit paths are well-maintained, comfortable walking shoes are essential for enjoying the circular trail.
