Omoriyama Momijigawa Valley is a breathtaking natural valley located in the Omoriyama Plateau within Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture. The area is defined by the flow of the Momijigawa River (a tributary of the Tateya River), and a well-maintained trekking course of approximately 4.5 km follows the river's edge. This area is highly regarded as a destination for those looking to immerse themselves in a preserved natural environment, offering a peaceful escape for hiking and trekking enthusiasts.
The valley is situated within the watershed of the Momijigawa River, which flows through Yamagata City. For many years, the local community and authorities have worked to preserve the natural landscape, ensuring that the unique geological formations and water flows remain intact. The changing topography and the rhythmic flow of the river are fundamental characteristics of this region's natural heritage.
The valley is filled with numerous natural landmarks created by the unique terrain. Along the trekking course, visitors can discover several stunning waterfalls, including Senata Falls, Kinuito Falls, Nunohiki Falls, Genryu Falls, and Fujibana Falls. These waterfalls serve as central scenic elements of the journey. Additionally, the path features several named points of interest such as Iwakoya, Hakun'un, Matsuo-fuchi, Seiryu-fuchi, Kujira-iwa, Senzan-fuchi, Hotele, and Hoshu, each offering a unique view of the landscape.
The scenery of Momijigawa Valley transforms beautifully with the seasons. The best time to visit is from May to November. However, please note that the area is closed during the winter season, from mid-November to mid-April. Visitors can enjoy the fresh greenery of spring, the refreshing cool water flows of summer, and the vibrant autumn colors of late fall. We highly recommend visiting during the autumn months to see the famous foliage that gives the valley its name.
The primary activity is hiking or trekking along the established 4.5 km path. This allows for a deep connection with the surrounding environment. As you walk, you will encounter various spots like waterfalls and rocky outcrops, making for a scenic and meditative stroll through the heart of nature.
The Omoriyama Plateau area is a hub for outdoor enthusiasts. Nearby attractions include the Tendo Kogen Ski Resort, various campsites, and the famous Zao Onsen hot spring area. This makes the valley an excellent starting point for a larger adventure in the Yamagata region.
